One-steps, Releases, and Creative Self-defense
One-steps - Hanbon Gyurugi | |

Green Stripe - 7th gup | Green Belt - 6th gup |
For the descriptions below, the attack is always a right-handed straight punch to the face. Students are reminded that they should always practice defense against both right- and left-handed attacks. |
|
Defense: step left and slightly forward with left leg while cross-body blocking with open left hand, followed by right-left double punch to kidneys and right-hand punch to jaw. Grasp attacker's clothing with right hand and, using right foot, 'step on' back of attacker's right knee while pulling shoulder toward you, causing collapse on floor. Finish with left-hand punch to attacker's head. | Defense: step back with left leg while using right arm to block to left, then continue spinning motion and with left leg step toward attacker, and use left elbow to strike to solar plexus. Continuing spin, step away with right leg into fighting stance. |

For the descriptions below, the attack is always a right-handed straight punch to the face. Students are reminded that they should always practice defense against both right- and left-handed attacks. |
|
Attack: Diagonal (right to right) wrist grab. | Attack: Straight across clothing grab. |
Defense: bend elbow and pull hand toward yourself, then rotate up and out and grasp attacker's wrist. Continue to rotate attacker's arm 'away' from you to straighten and lock elbow, then place other hand under shoulder and, stepping forward, push firmly upward and away. | Defense: place right hand over attacker's hand and grasp firmly by wrapping fingers into palm. Twist sharply 'inward' to lock elbow, holding hand in place against your body, then step forward with left foot and apply knife-hand strike to upper arm. Attacker's direction of movement can be controlled by maintaining pressure with knife-hand. |

Here’s a video from an ITF Taekwondo school in Greece. The class is self-defense, which is not specific to any one style, but is universal. There are some simple, yet effective techniques, which can be adapted (or adopted outright) by students.
